In the events business, things are constantly changing and evolving and your to-do list changes on almost a minute-to-minute basis, which can be kind of crazy. As the design and marketing specialist, I spend most of my time doing design work, which includes everything from creating logos to designing marketing collateral to making website updates, and the other part focused on marketing. I love coming to work because every day holds new and exciting challenges and the people I work with are very supportive of each other. We have a great culture and laugh a lot, so even if we’re working long hours at least we’re having fun!

As a cancer survivor, I share my inspiring story of overcoming the odds and transforming life’s trials into triumphs.  In spite of cancer I decided that “I CAN” overcome with my determination and the strength of God’s healing power.  I infuse my inspiring story, the power to persevere, and messages of hope into my 3 books, classrooms, churches, conferences, and various arenas, in order to compel and propel individuals to unlock the doors to their potential.

Priyan Weerappuli
Job Title: Founder & Executive Director
Company: Open Source Science Project
College: Michigan State University, Psychology, East Lansing, MI
High School: West Bloomfield High School, West Bloomfield, MI

After graduating from MSU, I spent three years developing a web-based platform where researchers and non-researchers can openly debate, discuss, and actively participate in meeting the challenges that our generation, and our world, will face in the years to come. To this end, in February I launched the research microfinance component of this platform that allows young researchers to propose research projects, and to receive funding (in the form of microinvestments) from the broader online community, in exchange for engaging in 'open-source' research practices - which means that all information and raw data produced during the research will be released unfiltered, and made openly available.  Ultimately, my hope is that these efforts will succeed in cultivating a global culture of innovation and community!

In terms of my day-to-day work; I spend most days splitting time between communicating with academic researchers (professors, lecturers), responding to questions/concerns regarding the research microfinance platform and developing/managing the online environment.  In addition, every so often, I also am privileged to speak with college/high school students regarding the importance of scientific research for ourselves and our future.

I love Detroit, the surrounding areas and Michigan. My hope is that we can pull together and once again become a place that people want to call home. Go Spartans!

Anna VanderMarliere
Job Title: Producer and Board Operator
Company: 97.1 The Ticket
College: Wayne State University, Radio/TV Broadcasting, D1 Womens Ice Hockey Program, Detroit, MI
High School: Lake Shore High School, St. Clair Shores, MI

I feel very fortunate to have two jobs that I absolutely love! I'm a producer/board operator (DJ) for the Karsch and Anderson show on 97.1 The Ticket, WXYT. Working in sports radio has always been a dream of mine, and I couldnt ask for a better environment or better co-workers than I have at the Ticket. I have always been very proud to be from the best sports city in America, and having the opportunity to work for the flagship station for Detroits 4 major sports puts me right in the middle of the action. Everyday, I learn, laugh and interact with fascinating people and passionate Detroit sports fans.

Ten years ago, I turned one of my biggest passions into a profession. I am Goalie Coach for local AAA  Ice Hockey organizations and high school programs; and 4 years ago started my own business, Point Blank Hockey School, LLC.  Point Blank specialize's in on-ice and off-ice training for Goaltenders, Girls High School programs and Youth Skill and Development. Having grown up in St. Clair Shores, playing hockey has always been an enormous part of my life and provided me with  friendships and memories that I hold dear to my heart. However, although playing was a blast, coaching gives me gratification beyond words. Seeing these children progress and gain confidence both on and off the ice, is an amazing feeling. This game has created so many opportunities for me and made so many of my dreams come true; if I can help just one player succeed and have those opportunities that they dream about, I will have accomplished my goal as a coach.

I look forward to going to work everyday and am so grateful to be from, live in and give back to Metro Detroit.

I joined the Arzika team and have watched the company nearly double in size since I came on board. Stephanie Angelyn Casola
Job Title: Account Executive/Content Manager
Company: Publicity Works
College: Michigan State University, College of Communication, Arts & Sciences, Journalism, East Lansing, MI
High School: Rochester Adams High School, Rochester Hills, MI

In January 2009 I stepped away from the career I loved and had never imagined leaving. After working for more than a decade as a full-time reporter covering arts, entertainment and news across metro Detroit, I watched newspapers, magazines and media outlets shrink and collapse around me. I knew I had to find a new way to use my writing skills and media experience. I had worked as a freelance copywriter for Publicity Works in the past and had a great working relationship with both Lisa Maas, the president of Publicity Works, and PR Manager Jim Miller.

The moment I announced I was leaving journalism and looking to make the move into public relations, they were both very supportive. I was hired on in a temporary capacity for a position that quickly led to my current full-time job as an account executive and content manager. I hope I was able to bring a reporter's perspective to our work, a sort of insider's understanding of deadlines, newsroom culture and story angles. I also made the move at a key time as social media began to take hold and transform in the industry. On my first week of work, Lisa suggested I read David Meerman Scott's The New Rules of PR and Marketing. With so much new to explore in the realm of social media, I was really drawn to the myriad of ways we are able to help share our clients' messages.

At Publicity Works I was encouraged to jump in with both feet and learn the PR ropes from every angle. I still spend much of my days writing – though now it is more often in the form of new business proposals, press materials and correspondence with reporters or clients. I love the fact that, as in my previous career, my days are never predictable. There is always a new challenge to tackle. We work with a wide range of clients – from restaurants to fashion taste-makers, non-profits and unions to financial experts. The approach changes to suit the needs of each one. I'm constantly researching some new topic. I've spent mornings looking on as one of our chef's cook on television;  days running around Fashion in Detroit runways to connect reporters with designers; and evenings supporting charitable events we've promoted. The work is fast-paced, interesting and unpredictable.

To keep my inner-journalist happy, I write a blog and freelance whenever there is time and opportunity to do so. I've found that as long as I'm doing work that I believe can make a difference, or shed light on something wonderful happening in the metro Detroit area, then I've accomplished something worthwhile. I feel lucky to continue to have that opportunity each day.

Dave Lemieux
Job Title: Marketing Coordinator
Company: Biznet Internet Solutions
College: Oakland University, Bachelor Degree, Rochester Hills, MI
High School: Stevenson High School, Sterling Heights, MI

My career with Biznet began in February of 09’ as an intern. I signed up with Oakland University’s career services in January of 09’ and within a month I received a phone call for an interview. They said they saw my resume on Oakland’s database (I didn’t even reach out to them!) and brought me in. I was ecstatic and a little nervous given it was my first interview for a possible “career job,” but I nailed it and got the paid internship I was hoping for. While pursuing a degree in Business Marketing I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to jump-start my career! Over the following months I gained a vast amount of knowledge on digital marketing, social media, and the importance of communicating effectively. Come September business was starting to boom and I was offered a full-time position as Marketing Coordinator. I was overjoyed and didn’t even think twice; I took the offer.

My responsibilities today include website copy writing and tweaking, search engine optimization, article and video distribution, analyzing metrics, social media monitoring, building client relationships...basically the behind the scenes stuff that helps companies websites get ranked higher in search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing...etc). I love what I do and I love the team I work with (probably most important factor for a successful business). The most rewarding part for me is seeing these campaigns, that we work so hard on, succeed and drive traffic along with potential business to their websites.

Doug Menzer
Job Title: Marketing Director/Owner
Company: Biznet Internet Solutions
College: Michigan State University, Bachelor of Applied Arts, Communications, Bachelor of Science, Psychology, East Lansing, MI
High School: Allen Park High School, Allen Park, MI

Controlled chaos is a great oxymoron and - it's how I feel my career has evolved over the past few years. Shortly after graduating from MSU (in May 2000) and winning my first full-time position at VSI Holdings, my mother, father, grandparents and close mentor's advice came true once again. Nothing comes easy (especially in Detroit.) I had found a great company to work for (side by side with 100's of great people) and it didn't work out. Not because I was fired, but the large holding company closed the doors and it was time for all of us to roll up our sleeves and move on.

I thrived on the spontaneity of that first job – so I immediately went back to work for a great company that I did an internship for in 1998 called Budco: The Dialogue Company. I was fortunate enough to have several management roles at Budco and worked under great leadership who had an entrepreneurial spirit. I admired many of the great mentors and witnessed how loyalty, leadership, passion and IT expertise aided in the company's incredible growth.

During my own entrepreneurial moonlighting gig starting in 2005 (with a partner based out of Saginaw), we successfully facilitated the rapid growth of an emerging ecommerce surgical supply company, Freshmenz Marketing Group. We aggressively winning several major Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) RFP’s. Then after strategically acquiring funding in late 2006 by a Management Company based out of Saginaw, Michigan, we opened a new office in Wixom, MI and I worked with organizations such as the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to help the surgical supply company network in Southeast Michigan to promote breakthrough growth. In early 2007, with this great entrepreneurial success in the surgical supply business, I carried on to other consultation jobs (with CJPS Enterprises) within the healthcare industry prior to joining SmartFinds Internet Marketing, entering back into marketing communications full time.

Today, having had experience with many fortune 100 clients and developing many great relationships built on trust, hard work and integrity, my vision (along with my partners) for our region is growth.  My background is extremely diversified so I'm comfortable with clients in the automotive, non-profit, healthcare and retail industries, which is perfectly suited for building digital marketing and social media strategies. At Biznet, our team works hard - and long hours are sometimes necessary due to the company's growth with large projects and a large amount of new projects. Recently, I have been fortunate to work with many great people who are just as determined to continue moving the ball forward. If jobs don't exist, let's create them… There is certainly enough work to go around!
