Peter Kersten releases techno under the name Sten. As Lawrence, he makes music that defies categorization, but it is fair to say that whatever you want to call it (house? tech-house?) it is deep, melancholy, introspective and infectiously danceable.

Kersten's Lawrence project got the attention of some of dance music's heaviest hitters, including Cologne's Kompakt and Ann Arbor's Ghostly International. The first self-titled Lawrence LP in 2002, and 2003's The Absence of Blight (on Kersten's own Dial imprint) and the most recent, The Night Will Last Forever, were a creative blending of house, minimal techno and experimental works.

As Sten, Kersten released Leaving the Frantic in 2004 and The Essence earlier this year. He has also been busy recording 12-inch dance singles under each project, and has remixed dozens of tracks as Lawrence and Sten.

Detroit promotions group Proper|Modulation brings Kersten to Trowbridge House of Coffee (10241 Jos. Campau, Hamtramck), where he will perform live Friday, Nov. 28. Also performing: DJs Aran Daniels, Drew Pompa, Metaphaze, TRS and Buckminister. Check out the video flyer here. Doors 9 p.m.
