Ferndale Insider's Guide

Woodward and Nine Mile is Metro Detroit's closest thing to a gayborhood. It's also a hipster haven -- but hip without being pretentious. Downtown Ferndale keeps the chain stores at bay and is a hub for ethnic dining (Ethiopian, Mideastern, Japanese, Thai, etc. are all here). This is the place to find shops both vintage and kitschy, dining both swanky and dive, and bars both uber hip and sublimely laid back.

Jen Gothard

Jen likes her Thai medium-hot, her movies with beer attached, and she knows a place where you can bring your own bottle, which hardly ever happens around here.

Dawne Velianoff

Give this girl a crowd, a party, some DJs, blonde beers, cheap saketinis, maybe some dancing, thrift store finds and veggie eats, and she's good to go.

Angela Duncan

Angela likes things laid back: Red Stripes with friends at the Emory, gingerbread waffles in the morning, little shops that sell vintage and handmade goodies. Very cool. Very chill.
